Do Plecos Eat Fish Poop?

One of the most common myths about pleco fish is that they eat poop. This is false. Plecos do not eat poop. Plecos eat algae, vegetables, fruit, and shrimp. They might accidentally ingest poop, but these "bottom feeders" aren't eating from bottoms.

It's easy to see why this myth is so popular. If plecos eat poop, then fish tanks don't need to be cleaned. Wouldn't that be nice? Sure, but it's just not true.
